Features of the 2024 GMC Hummer EV Pickup

Overview

The 2024 GMC Hummer EV is the brand's electric supertruck. What makes the nearly five-ton EV pickup super? It has a host of hardcore hardware and up to 1000 horsepower. That output pertains to the tri-motor all-wheel-drive configuration that also has a WTF mode—short for Watts to Freedom. The one we tested hit 60 mph in 3.3 seconds, incredibly rapid for something this petite. Its prolonged emergency stopping distance was less impressive. GMC advertises a maximum operating range of 381 miles; the 570-hp dual-motor AWD model has a 311-mile estimate. Range is reduced with the Extreme Off-Road package that adds 35-inch mud-terrain tires, beefier axles, and additional underbody armor. All Hummer EV vehicles have a five-foot cab, a height-adjustable air suspension, rear-axle steering, and Super Cruise (GM's hands-free driving tech). If you don't need a pickup truck bed, there's also an SUV version, which we review separately. While its interior isn't on par with its approximately six-digit price tag, there's nothing else on the road or the terrain quite like the 2024 Hummer EV pickup vehicle.

What's New for 2024?

Sometime this year GMC is expected to introduce a more affordable version of the Hummer pickup, which will likely still cost north of $85,000. While we await details about that model, the top-spec EV3X has higher range estimates than the previous model year due to a newly available 24-module battery pack. GMC claims the $9995 option increases the truck's optimum range per charge to 381 miles.

EV Motor, Power, and Performance

The Hummer EV currently offers either two or three electric motors. Both configurations offer all-wheel drive; the dual-motor setup has 570 hp and the tri-motor version has 1000 power. The Hummer EV Edition 1 we tested had the latter, and it soared to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds due to its Watts to Freedom (WTF) launch control driving mode. That makes it one of the quickest pickups we've ever tested. While we were impressed by its acceleration, we were underwhelmed by its braking performance. Slowing the enormous machine to a halt from 70 mph took an extra-long 211 feet, and repeated runs resulted in perceptible brake wear. Yikes. Maneuverability at low velocities is better than anticipated, a direct consequence of the rear-wheel-steering system, but once you're up and running the Hummer EV is as ungainly to operate as other elevated brodozers.

Towing and Payload Capacity

The Hummer EV pickup's maximal towing capacity is a substantial 12,000 pounds, but that necessitates going with the 570-hp dual-motor powertrain. That exceeds the specifications for the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Rivian R1T, which are rated at up to 10,000 and 11,000 pounds, respectively. However, Hummers with three motors have a transport capacity between 7500 and 8500 pounds. During our towing test hauling a 6100-pound double-axle camping trailer, the range of our Hummer EV fell to just 140 miles at 70 mph.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

The Hummer EV is available with two battery capacities. The standard 20-module battery provides an EPA-estimated driving range of 311 miles for the EV2X and 314 miles for the EV3X. The latter can be equipped with a 24-module battery that GMC claims provides up to 381 miles of range. Opting for the Extreme Off-Road package reduces that estimate to 359 miles. The Hummer EV Edition 1 we tested on our 75-mph highway route traveled 290 miles on a full charge. While it attained a maximal charging rate of 287 kilowatts while connected to a DC fast-charger, it only averaged 98 kW, and it took more than two hours to charge its battery from 10 to 90 percent. GMC claims the Hummer EV pickup will add 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes; we needed about twice as long.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe

The Hummer truck's enormous weight is the adversary of efficiency. The three-motor model with its standard 22-inch wheels has an EPA-rated 58 MPGe combined. Compare that with the most potent variant of the F-150 Lightning and R1T (both fitted with 22-inch rims) that yield 66 and 68 MPGe, respectively. For more information about the Hummer EV's gasoline efficiency, consult the EPA's website.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Even though Hummers of yesteryear were predominantly SUVs, the Hummer EV takes the form of a crew-cab pickup truck with a five-foot-long trailer. Interior materials could be of higher quality considering the Hummer's price tag and its interior isn't as capacious as GMC Sierra 1500 crew cabs. But the interior can be exposed to the elements via optional removable roof panels that reintroduce a T-top–esque design prevalent in GM sports and muscle cars in the 1970s and 1980s. When in position, the transparent panels are analogous to a normal panoramic glass sunroof, but removing them off and stowing them in the Hummer's front compartment gives the vehicle a convertible atmosphere similar to that of the Jeep Gladiator. Inside, several moon-inspired touches—such as a moon-boot imprint on the dead pedal and speaker grilles that depict the Sea of Tranquility—serve as not-so-subtle reminders of GM's connection to NASA astronauts and the electrically propelled Apollo 15 lunar rover that the company helped engineer.

Infotainment and Connectivity

A large 13.4-inch display functions as the infotainment screen, and there's a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel as well. GMC has contracted Epic Games—maker of the immensely popular Fortnite video game—to produce the graphics for the Hummer EV's infotainment interface. The high-resolution screen and advanced graphics appear fantastic, but we noted some pronounced latency that suggests the system doesn't have quite the computational capacity it needs to keep up with the software's capabilities. A host of connectivity features are standard, including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and GM's OnStar telematics system.
